Arranger Bob Curnow transcribed a dozen compositions by Pat Metheny and/or Lyle Mays and adapted them for his big band. The 20-piece big band is full of some of the cream of L.A.’s jazz scene and includes such soloists as trombonists Andy Martin and Rick Culver; saxophonists Bob Sheppard, Rob Lockart, and Danny House; pianist Bill Cunliffe; and a mighty trumpet section. The unusual concept works perfectly and provides a new look at both Metheny’s music and the big-band tradition.
The Music City Big Band, 2018’s Best Jazz Group at the Nashville Industry Music Awards, led by Casey Brefka, is a dynamic group featuring some of the premier jazz talents in Nashville. With a combination of established studio players, and fresh, younger jazz talent, this innovative group performs both classic big band music, as well as new, contemporary big band music composed by some of the best writers Nashville has to offer.
