The Great Albums concert series continued Sunday, July 28 with “At Mister Kelly’s” by Sarah Vaughn performed by Crystal Miller, with the John Birdsong Trio featuring Kelli Cox & Chester Thompson. The music was great, enjoyed by a lively crowd at the City Winery’s Upstairs Lounge! The next Great Albums Concert is scheduled for Sunday, September 15 . . . details shortly!
Recorded quite early in the days of the live LP, the album captured Sarah Vaughan at her best and most relaxed, stretching out on a set of late-night torch songs and ballads. With a trio including Jimmy Jones on piano, Roy Haynes on drums, and Richard Davis on bass, Vaughan is simply captivating. Her unerring sense of rhythm carries her through every song on this set. This album easily disproves the notion that, to be entertaining, singers needed inventive arrangements and multiple voices (instrumental or otherwise) behind them.
Crystal Miller will move you with the music that moves her. That’s why, when you hear Crystal, you hear the combination of ALL of her musical experiences. When asked which genre of music she prefers, she’ll tell you, “That’s like asking a woman to choose one favorite pair of shoes–it’s virtually impossible!!–different genres speak to me for different reasons”–like the memories of the R&B, Pop and Rock of her youth, to the stories and harmonies of Country and Bluegrass, to the impassioned lyrics and sensual, soul-affirming rhythms of the Latin music that she’s grown to love performing.
