We decided to drop by Union Common Sunday evening, where guitarist (TJBS Board Member) Cliff Richmond has a regular (1-2 times a month) Sunday evening gig. Cliff had assembled a fine group of musicians, including fellow TJBS Board Member Greg Bryant (bass), Don Aliquo (sax, clarinet, and flute), Steve Willets (piano), and Ray Massey (drums).

The restaurant is located on the triangle where 21st Avenue South meets Broadway and Division, and windows on either side of the room give patrons a nice view of the town outside. Inside the vibe is sleek and contemporary, but quiet (patrons can hear themselves talk!). There’s a full bar menu and a food menu that includes many interesting “small plates” as well as full meals. And who should we see there but General Manager Steve Lapiska, formerly of F. Scott’s. Steve noted that the restaurant wants to do its part to present live jazz, and Cliff’s gig is part of this.

The acoustics are excellent, and the band’s mellow jazz standards were just right for the room. Cliff’s group often goes by the name of the “CliffNotes” as it was billed tonight.  There are always good musicians in the band along with a few special guests sitting in. We were treated to an evening of great music and food!

Keep you eyes on the TJBS Community Calendar for future jazz nights at this venue. The next one coming up is Sunday, March 26.
