Jazz and blues events are all over town, if you know where to look, at venues large and small. Here are some that may surprise you:

THE RYMAN – Known as “The Mother Church of Country Music,” The Ryman is actually pretty eclectic in its bookings. December is the 12th annual Christmas tour of rockabilly star Brian Setzer and his orchestra. In April 2016, it’s Chick Corea and Bela Fleck, touring in support of their new CD.

THE SCHERMERHORN – The Nashville Symphony presents an annual Jazz Series. After leading off with singer Michael Feinstein, they’re presenting pianist David Benoit for a Christmas tribute to Charlie Brown December 6.

THE FRANKLIN THEATRE – This venue has been booking more and more jazz and blues of late. September through November saw concerts by Booker T. Jones, the Heritage Blues Orchestra, and The Four Freshmen. On December 10 they’ll present guitarist John Scofield with Jon Cleary. On December 19 it’s Asleep at the Wheel in a Christmas show and on December 31 the Cab Calloway Orchestra.

THE CITY WINERY – Not known as a presenter of jazz and blues, the City Winery is increasing its profile in this area. On November 16 they present legendary R&B songwriter/sideman Dan Penn. It’s Tab Benoit on November 17 and a pair of local bookings: the Lynn Beal Big Band with a jazz brunch November 22 and the Nashville Jazz Orchestra with Dara Tucker November 29.
