The next TJBS Great Albums Concert is set to take place Sunday, August 5th, 2018  in The Lounge at City Winery. This concert highlights J.J. Johnson’s “Standards- Live at the Village Vanguard” lead by trombonist Roland Barber.

Recorded in July 1988 at the renowned Village Vanguard, this set features trombonist J.J. Johnson’s quintet with Ralph Moore on tenor and soprano, pianist Stanley Cowell, bassist Rufus Reid and drummer Victor Lewis jamming on nine Jazz standards including is Johnson’s “Shortcake.” Johnson is in top form, particularly on “My Funny Valentine,” “Just Friends,” “Misterioso” and “Autumn Leaves”–which stand as great examples of the ageless talents of this trombonist.

Roland Barber has performed with an impressively diverse list of artists including Chaka Khan, Duke Ellington Orchestra, Wynton Marsalis and Jazz at Lincoln Center, Kirk Whalum, the Wooten Brothers, the Chico O’Farill Orchestra, Robin Thicke, the Temptations, Manny Oquendo y Libre and the NBC Saturday Night Live Band. He’s performed in venues such as Carnegie Hall, Birdland, the Blue Note, the Beacon Theater, Lincoln Center, the Copacabana, the Kennedy Center and Madison Square Garden. Roland is no stranger to the Great Albums stage. He recently joined his brother, Rahsaan, during our Great Albums tribute to Art Blakey’s “Moanin’”.

Joining Roland will be saxophonist Don Aliquo, pianist Bruce Dudley, bassist Jack Aylor, and drummer Chester Thompson. Doors open at 5 pm and the concert begins at 7 pm. Tickets are $20, $15 for TJBS members. Click the image below to purchase tickets
