TJBS Great Albums Concert: Back at the Chicken Shack

March 10 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

$20

The Great Albums concert series continues with Jimmy Smith’s “Back at the Chicken Shack” performed by Moe Denham. Sunday, March 10, 2019 in The Lounge at City Winery Nashville. Doors open at 5 pm and the show begins at 7 pm. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased from City Winery’s website.

Back at the Chicken Shack is one of organist Jimmy Smith’s classic Blue Note sessions, and the first to draw attention to tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine. Recorded in 1960 with Kenny Burrell on guitar, Donald Bailey on drums, and Turrentine, the group reaches the peak of funky soul jazz that all other challenges of the genre would have to live up to. Included on this uptempo session is a reworking of “When I Grow Too Old to Dream” (a feature for Turrentine), Turrentine’s “Minor Chant,” two Smith compositions, “Messy Bessie” as well as the set’s notable title cut. Smith’s Midnight Special album was recorded at these same sessions and is also exceptional.

Nashville-based session musician Moe Denham has tamed the beast over decades as a sideman to some of the biggest names in jazz and blues: Count Basie and Clarence Gatemouth Brown, for example. He’s opened for Ray Charles, B.B. King and The Platters. And he’s performed with such diverse talents as Neil Young, Bela Fleck and Ernest Tubb.
